Episode 185: Emergent Storytelling In Games

Ubisoft is getting into the emergent storytelling game, but is this just an excuse to cut content from games? Get emergent with us on an all new episode!

Is emergent storytelling lazy storytelling?
Greetings adventurers, and welcome to this weeks installment of The Surly Nerd! After our prelude, we kick things off in comics where BLACK BOLT is getting his own title. Also in the world of Marvel, we get deep into the rosters for the all new X-men titles and pick our favorites. Level one comes to a close with a big debate over the future of MARVEL and FOX for X-men licences.
Over in games, we get into what’s new for NO MAN’S SKY and if it’s too little, too late. We also have Peter Molyneux trying to get people hyped for a Fable 4 that will never happen, and wrap things up with a bunch of news items in the world of the Street Fighter 5 competitive scene.
Over in the world of entertainment, DUNE is being picked up by LEGENDARY PICTURES – but is it time for a new DUNE movie? We also explain what SNOWPIERCER is, and why it’s finally getting its own television show. Level 3 winds down with an argument if the NEW MUTANTS movie is real or just a concept, bringing back a debate from level 1.
Our epilogue this week is about the concept of emergent storytelling, and if it is just an excuse for lazy game design. As always, we appreciate all our adventurers who listen to the show every week and we look forward to your feedback on what we discuss! (info@thesurlynerd.com!)
